Note

PNG files are restricted to 2000x2000 pixels.
SVG files are restricted to 20000x20000 pixels.
While PNG files should be pixel-perfect, SVG files might be rendered differently in different browsers, even though fonts are embedded.

Why? What's wrong with placekitten, placebeer and placehold.co?

Those services are great and I did use them. But they have a different focus: Nice images, flexibility. The drawbacks I encountered are:

  1. Images for the same URL are not stable and eventually break visual regression tests.
    We provide stable images that do not change, as long as the URL is the same.
  2. When using content-fit: cover or overflow: hidden, it is not clearly visible, which parts are cut off.
    We generate images that show, how much is truncated. This is an example.

This site uses plausible.io to track usage. Plausible does not use cookies and does not collect personal data. The site is hosted on AWS. Amazon CloudFront collects IP-address, URL, referer URL, Browser and OS information. This data is used for security and performance reasons.
